Sources and notes (9)
- 1. Clockodo, Traffic-light account (warning levels with an automatic alert): The page on the hours account shows plus and minus hours against target time, without warning levels and without an alert when a limit is exceeded (clockodo.com/de/funktionen/stundenkonto, retrieved 14 September 2026). Clockodo does have thresholds with email notification on the Plus plan, but they apply to the project budget, not the working-time account.
- 2. Clockodo, Working-time models (part-time, flexitime, trust-based working time): Individual daily target hours per weekday and flexitime via hours accounts, no shift planning (early/late/night) and no A/B weeks.
- 3. MetronHR, Shift and duty planning / roster: An optional module, included in the Professional plan and activated per company, either as shift planning or as duty planning with a day plan. MetronHR also works entirely without both.
- 4. Clockodo, Shift and duty planning / roster: The feature overview lists working time recording, time clock, hours account, absences, project time and invoicing. A duty or shift roster is not listed there (clockodo.com/de/funktionen, retrieved 3 September 2026).
- 5. Clockodo, Allowances / hour packages: Project and interval budgets with periodic reset exist; client-bound hour packages with roll-over do not.
- 6. Clockodo, Digital Employee File: The feature overview mentions absence management and digital holiday requests. A personnel file with contracts, salary data and documents is not in it; for personnel administration Clockodo points to separate HR systems (clockodo.com/de/funktionen, retrieved 3 September 2026).
- 7. Clockodo, Onboarding and offboarding workflows: A joining or leaving process with tasks, owners and deadlines is not listed in the feature overview (clockodo.com/de/funktionen, retrieved 3 September 2026).
- 8. MetronHR, Hosting operator without a US parent company: The operator is Hetzner Online GmbH, a German company with no US parent. This marketing website is hosted with Vercel, Inc. (USA) in the Frankfurt region, where no employee data is processed.
- 9. Clockodo, Hosting operator without a US parent company: The data centres are in Germany, but they are operated by Microsoft. Microsoft discontinued the trustee model with T-Systems, which placed access under a German data trustee, in 2021.

Where the data sits
Server location and operator are two different questions. A data centre in Germany does not remove the data from US law: providers with a US parent company fall under the CLOUD Act and the surveillance powers of FISA 702, regardless of where the servers stand. Microsoft's chief legal officer in France testified under oath before the French Senate's committee of inquiry on 10 June 2025 that he could not guarantee that data from European data centres would not go to US authorities (record of the Sénat). That is why both are shown side by side here, each with the source it comes from.
What is compared is what the provider documents for its own application, not the infrastructure of its marketing website. More about our own hosting is in the Trust Center.
MetronHR
- Server location of the application
- Hetzner Online GmbH, Nuremberg and Falkenstein. All servers stand exclusively in Germany.
- Operator and legal jurisdiction
- Hetzner Online GmbH, a German company with no US parent and therefore beyond the reach of the CLOUD Act and FISA 702. No US provider sits in the data path for the application.
- Processors outside Germany
- None for the application. Payment is handled by Stripe Payments Europe (Ireland). This marketing website is hosted with Vercel, Inc. (USA, Frankfurt region), and analytics run through PostHog Cloud EU and the reverse proxy cdn.metronhr.de with a Cloudflare edge. No employee data is processed there.

Five of the eleven connections go to accounting, none to payroll. At Clockodo the payroll export runs through its own DATEV file, not through a partner connection.

MetronHR
MetronHR connects to no other software today. What exists: the export as Excel and CSV for every report, plus an iCal feed that carries absences and the duty plan into Outlook and Google. Lexware Office and sevdesk come next.
A long list of connections is not the price of entry in this market: two of the five providers surveyed name only two to four connections themselves.
What MetronHR does better
A full digital personnel file, not provided for by Clockodo
Clockodo positions itself as specialised time tracking and points to separate HR systems for personnel administration, recruiting, onboarding and payroll. Employees are therefore kept in Clockodo as pure time tracking users: name, email, hourly rate. Contracts, salary letters, social security, health insurance, document upload with expiry reminders (residence permits, driving licence checks, occupational health) are not provided for. MetronHR delivers the full file per employee with self-service, GDPR-compliant retention and permission control, with no second licence alongside.
Real working-time models, shifts and A/B weeks that Clockodo does not cover
Clockodo allows individual daily target hours per weekday and employee and covers flexitime via hours accounts, which handles full-time, part-time and mini-jobs. What Clockodo does not cover: shift rosters (early/late/night), alternating weekly patterns (A/B weeks) and different working-time models in parallel per department. MetronHR offers three-level models (day / week / month), assignable as a tenant default and individually per employee: office with flexitime, sales with trust-based working time, warehouse with shifts in parallel in the same system, automatically linked to the overtime account and holiday entitlement.
Onboarding & offboarding as a workflow, not provided for by Clockodo
A new employee at Clockodo? You create a user; ordering hardware, setting up access, signing contracts, scheduling mandatory training, and on leaving withdrawing access and collecting devices, all happens alongside in Notion, Trello or Excel. On its own website Clockodo points to separate HR systems for these personnel processes. MetronHR defines reusable workflows with tasks, owners, deadlines and automatic task assignment, documented with editor and timestamp and linked to the personnel file.
Client allowances with auto-renewal, instead of project budgets alone
Clockodo works with budgets per project (monetary or hours), including interval budgets with a periodic reset, but tied to the project, not the client. What is missing: client-bound hour packages with roll-over of unused hours, a usage view per client and periodic invoice preparation. Exactly the retainer model many agencies bill. MetronHR offers that out of the box, with usage per allowance shown as a progress bar and configurable auto-renewal and roll-over.

FromClockodo moving to MetronHR
Your data comes with you.Clockodo hands them over as a file, MetronHR reads people, personal data, hours and absences out of it, and before anything is taken over you see row by row what will happen. For a team under thirty people that is a matter of one to two hours, most of it spent putting the file together.
- 1
AtClockodo export
- Any report from the report builder as CSV, filtered by period, person, project or service
- The same columns the CSV import of time entries, clients, projects and services expects
- 2
Load the template and map the columns
The template comes as Excel and as CSV, with a second sheet that states for every column whether it is required, its format, an example and the permitted values. If your file's header row matches, the mapping falls away entirely. Otherwise the assistant proposes the mapping and marks everything that did not match word for word.
- 3
Check, then take it over
The dry run is mandatory and writes nothing. It shows for every row whether it will be created, changed, skipped or rejected, naming the column and the value behind the finding. Only the second click takes it over, in one transaction. The default is "create new ones only", and an empty cell never changes a value that has been maintained.

Frequently asked questions
What you need to know about switching from Clockodo to MetronHR.
Clockodo: Basic 4 euros per user (time and holiday only), Pro 10 euros per user (with project time, budgets, client hourly rates), Pro Plus 12 euros per user (with SSO, SLA, budget alerts); from 20 users an individual quote on request. No setup fee, cancellable monthly, 14-day trial, 5 per cent annual discount. MetronHR: 5 euros per user on Team, 10 euros per user on Professional, likewise no setup fee, cancellable monthly. Anyone who needs project time tracking pays about the same with either (Clockodo Pro 10 euros vs. MetronHR Professional 10 euros), with the personnel file, onboarding and allowances on top at MetronHR.
Clockodo allows individual daily target hours per weekday and flexitime via hours accounts, so full-time, part-time and mini-jobs. Not representable: shift rosters (early/late/night), A/B weeks and different models in parallel per department. MetronHR offers these models side by side in the same company, as a tenant default and assignable individually per employee.
Yes, and more. Both offer a stopwatch, manual entry after the fact, a mobile app, activity and client assignment, and budgets per project with a target-actual comparison. MetronHR adds client-bound allowances with auto-renewal (the retainer model), a complete personnel file and onboarding workflows, all in one tool, with no second licence alongside an HR system.
Yes. Clockodo offers CSV and Excel exports for time entries, projects and clients as well as a DATEV export for payroll. You import that data into MetronHR; employee master data you complete once with the personnel file (contracts, documents, social data), and after that HR and time sit in one place instead of two.
Anyone who only wants to track project time and keeps HR matters separately in Excel or a drive can generally get by with pure time tracking software. As soon as holiday requests are to be approved digitally, contracts stored in an audit-proof way, onboarding standardised or shifts and trust-based working time represented, a second system is needed alongside, or MetronHR directly with HR and time in one tool.
Reports are built into MetronHR directly: by project, client, employee, period and activity type, exportable as CSV or Excel, plus dashboards for utilisation, target/actual and overtime. MetronHR also provides the HR view (remaining holiday, overtime accounts, sickness statistics), so time and personnel reporting in one tool.
